Would you be surprised to learn that many people who suffer from back pain are able to lead relatively pain-free, happy lives? If you suffer from severe back pain, this statement may come as a surprise for you.

Use ice to help alleviate back pain, as it can reduce swelling and inflammation from injuries that cause back pain. Apply the ice to the affected area two or three times per day for 10 to 20 minutes, and this may help you feel better. An ice pack or a bag of frozen vegetables can be used for this purpose.

Sleep on your side in order to prevent and alleviate back pain. Also, place a pillow between your knees to help keep your spine in proper alignment. Sleeping on your stomach or back can result in back pain, but sleeping on your side with knees slightly bent is helpful.

Take over-the-counter pain medications first. A simple over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication can usually take the edge off most backaches. Follow the instructions on the label, and take it as directed when your back starts acting up. If it isnt enough, consider paying a visit to your doctor.

In order to help prevent back pain from occurring, make sure you use chairs properly. For example, many office chairs have controls for adjusting the height and position of the seat back part of the chair. Utilize these controls to ensure you are getting the most comfortable, back-friendly position possible when using these chairs.

Exercise regularly to increase your cores strength. Make sure to focus on your abs and back muscles. Incorporate plenty of strength and flexibility exercises into your exercise regimen to help you keep your core strong and flexible, which reduces the risk for back pain to develop in the future.

Believe it or not, sleep is actually an essential part of healing from back injuries. Your body does most of its repair work at night when you are relaxed and sleeping and can dedicate all of your energy to healing. If you are experiencing chronic back pain, then good sleep is as important as good medicine.

If you suffer from problems with back pain, heat and ice your back. In the first two to three days of back pain, you want to put ice on it to reduce the inflammation. Aafter the first three days of icing your back you want to apply heat to loosen and relax your muscles.

Exercise

Once your initial back pain subsides, try going for a walk. Dont carry anything and keep your head up. This kind of gentle exercise can reduce back spasms and improve your mood. If the walk doesnt reduce or eliminate the pain, it will at least take your mind off of it.

Make sure youre getting enough exercise. Exercise is essential to keeping the muscles in your back and your abs strong and healthy. If your muscles are too weak, youll be putting a lot more stress on your bones. Stronger muscles help take some of that stress for themselves and save the bones.

Make sure to always remember to stretch before you attempt any sort of exercise or physical activity. Stretching allows your back to get prepared for the activity to come. Forgetting this important step can lead to serious pain later on and that is what we want to avoid.

Before you begin to exercise or do any other type of physical activity, you should always warm up to prevent muscle pulls and cramping. Even if youre only going for a light jog or a walk around the block, a muscle cramp in your lower back can cause excruciating pain that will not soon subside.

If back pain is a regular character in your life, then you know all too well what a heavy weight it can be on your lifestyle. Your relationships will often suffer, and it can even affect your work.
